Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) / Foundation Degrees (FdAs) – what are they?

The College offers Higher National Certificate & Diploma (HNC & HND) and Foundation Degree (FdA) Higher Education qualifications. HNCs/HNDs are University level vocational qualifications designed to give you specialist knowledge in your chosen field. They are equivalent to the first year or the first two years of a full-time university degree. Like HNDs, Foundation degrees are equivalent to the first two years of a full-time university degree, and combine vocational and academic study. Both qualifications can be ‘topped up’ with a final year at university to convert into a full degree.

For home students, our Higher Education courses are more affordable than you might think. With nothing to pay upfront, you will only have to pay back your tuition fee loan once you are earning a minimum of £21,000. For example, if you were earning £22,000 per year the repayment on a tuition fee loan might work out at just £7.50 per month. For more information on student finance, call our HE Adviser on 01582 477776.

What happens after my course?

The Higher Education qualifications we offer are highly vocational – which means they are designed to get you into the job you want. You will have many options that allow you to progress to a full degree, or take away a vocational Higher Education qualification and go straight into the workplace. The College has a progression agreement with local universities that allows you to enter the final year of a degree programme after completing a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma with us.

Government inspectors from the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) have praised the College for the quality of our Higher Education courses. We are proud of our lecturers and proud of the success our students go on to achieve. Our tutors work closely with students, providing them with the special attention you would expect from a small, high-quality Higher Education establishment. Studying at Higher Education level in college is like being in an executive jet where the pilot knows your name. It's all about first class service.

Not ready for Higher Education?

If you are 19 or over and do not meet the entry requirements for Higher Education study, a one year Access to HE course may be right for you. An Access to HE course will enable you to move up to HE level study. They are Level 3 courses, equivalent to A-levels or BTEC Level 3 Diplomas. Our Access to HE courses are designed for adults who have previously missed opportunities to gain academic qualifications, so you don’t need specific qualifications to get on the course. You must be 19 years or over at the start of the course and committed to studying intensively. And you must demonstrate aptitude for this level of study by gaining satisfactory results in entry tests in Literacy and, if relevant Numeracy. The College is proud of our many Access students who never thought they could, but who have succeeded in winning places at University.
