Admission to the course is by interview and assessment, no formal qualifications are required. Once you have applied, you will be invited to an information, interview and assessment session during which English and Mathematics skills will be assessed. This is to ensure that you are working at around Level One in English and at least Entry Level 3 in Maths at the start of your course or higher. If we find that you still have some progress to make in English or Maths, then we will discuss our Move on in English and Maths courses with you at interview.

Course Description

On the 30 week course, you will study Mathematics, English and Research, IT and Study Skills. You will take qualifications in English and Mathematics. Depending on your starting point, these will be Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications. On the 15 week course starting in March, you will study Maths and/or English and take Functional Skills qualifications.

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is suitable for anyone who wishes to develop their English, Mathematics and study skills in order to progress to a higher level of study within the college. It can prepare you for the Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma or for GCSE study, depending on your starting point.

Course content

English: Writing for different audiences and purposes, including academic writing; reading different texts with speed and accuracy; spelling, punctuation and grammar. Mathematics: numeracy (including fractions, ratios, percentages); statistics (including averages, probability); problem-solving.

You will also carry out an independent research project on a topic of your own interest, learning to use the internet for find information and developing you IT, time-management and study skills.

Maths and English skills are the core of this course.

Employability Skills Development

The course is specifically designed to prepare you for further study.

How will the course be taught?

The course is taught through classroom teaching and your own independent research, guided by your tutors. You can study day time or evening.

How will I know how well I am doing?

There are regular informal tests to show you how well you are doing before you take the formal tests for qualification.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no additional costs. The college offers a bursary scheme. You can apply for a bursary to help with costs such as travel or childcare, for instance, and the amount you are awarded will depend on your income.
