Four GCSEs at grades A-C (4-9) (English at Grade C/4 is desirable) or a relevant Level 2 qualification. A real interest in animals, science and business, as well as the motivation to succeed are important. If you do not meet your requirement, please ask about our Level 1 programmes. Our Way Into Animal Care course may suit you well.
The Level 3 National Diploma in Animal Management is a nationally recognised qualification that will help you make develop skills and experience in aspects of Animal Care. This programme will equip you with the skills, knowledge, attitude and values required to work towards a successful career in Animal Care.
Who is the course suitable for?
If your options open to either an apprenticeship or further study, then this course may suit you well. The course is suitable for anyone wanting to use their interest in science and animal care in their work or further study.
You are going to be trained by experienced professionals who have knowledge in the fields you may be interested in. We have high professional standards and expectations of our learners.
This course prepares you with skills and knowledge in a variety of topics that will prepare you for the next level of education, Apprenticeship or a job in Animal Care. You will go to a local animal visitor attraction for a day each week for hands-on learning and teaching by professionals in the field. You will attend the main college site at Dunstable for three days to cover theory and core skills and work in the Biology lab. In addition, youll need to complete 100 hours of work experience across the year. a few.
Development of Maths and English
You will develop and use English and Mathematics throughout the course. Students who have not yet achieved at least a C/4 grade in English and Maths will continue taking these subjects to improve their qualifications.
Employability Skills Development
Your study programme includes 1 hour per week of employability skills development which includes Careers Education, support and guidance on progression opportunities. Teaching throughout the course at college and at the visitor attraction is geared towards developing your practical employability skills, including customer service.

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced industry professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations. Assessment is through coursework assignments and observations of your practical skills and your tutors will give you feedback straight away on how well you have done and what you can do to improve.
Are there any additional costs?
Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college in Dunstable, the Centre and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings. You will need overalls and steel-capped wellingtons.
What can I do next?
You can progress onto University. You may seek a higher apprenticeship with an employer involved in Animal Care. You could start work in a pet shop, animal shelter, cattery or kennel, safari Park or Zoo.
