Course Description

The AAT Certificate is a Level 3 programme designed to develop sound skills in finance and accounting which can be used at work. Students can use their knowledge and skills in accounting and finance in Accounting Departments or in any other work setting that involves dealing with financial matters. AAT courses give students the skills as well as the qualification they need to take their study further. The courses are designed to build confidence and personal development and to enable learners to work independently and successfully in order to move to the next Level. AAT is a national suite of qualifications recognised by employers across the country. AAT students are valued for their determination and independent study skills.

Who is the course suitable for?

AAT is ideal for anyone who wishes to study finance and accounting and to move on to a job, apprenticeship or further study in one of these areas. Nearly all organisations have a finance and accounting department, whatever their business. AAT qualifications are very well regarded by employers. You will need the motivation and commitment to and prepare for exams and a real enthusiasm for learning.

Course content

You will study the following units: Using Accounting Software; Bookkeeping Transactions; Bookkeeping Controls; Elements of Costing. You will also consider ethical business practice and job roles in finance and accounting.

Development of Maths and English

You will develop and use English and Mathematics throughout the course. Both subjects are particularly important for accounting. You will work towards Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications in English and Maths if you do not already have Grade C in these subjects.

Employability Skills Development

Your study programme includes 1 hour per week of employability skills development which includes Careers Education, support and guidance on progression opportunities.

How will the course be taught?

Learning methods include lectures, classroom based learning, research using the internet, group work, discussion and individual written work. Lessons are planned to take the learning needs of each individual into account. This is a demanding course and you will have to make sure that you have time each week to do a substantial amount of preparation and practice. You will be in college four days a week and will undertake a block of work experience.

How will I know how well I am doing?

The Units are assessed through online exams. You will work through assessments regularly so that you and your teacher can check your progress and go over any topics you are finding difficult. There will be practice exams before you sit the final examinations themselves. Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

You will need basic stationery, and a good USB stick and a good calculator are useful. We have an excellent library and good IT facilities at college. We may request contributions for trips and outings. Coming to college is a full-time commitment and you should factor in the cost of travelling to college and potentially a local work placement.

What course can I do next?

You can progress to the Level 4 AAT Diploma once you have completed Level 3. AAT is a suite of qualifications that can lead you to degree level or beyond. You can do that as the second year of a study programme in college or you can seek an apprenticeship at this level.
