Admission to the course is by interview either face to face or by phone; no formal qualifications are required. However, you will need strong enough skills in English and Mathematics to enable you to cope with the demands of the course.
The AAT Access Award is a Level 1 programme designed to give a solid introduction to finance and accounting. You will build your confidence and use your skills in any area of work, whether in employment or your own business. The course will equip you to move on to the next level if you wish. AAT is a national suite of qualifications recognised by employers across the country. AAT students are valued for their determination and independent study skills.
Who is the course suitable for?
AAT is ideal for adults (people over 19) who wish to study finance and accounting to support them in their jobs, own businesses or to enable them to change career direction. It is very well regarded by employers. You will need the motivation and commitment to complete preparation for an exam at the end of the course.
You will learn accounting terminology and build your numeracy skills as well as learning what the professional accounting environment is like. You will study the following units: Mathematics for Accounting; Essential Accounting Procedures; Creating a Business Document; Accounting in a Professional Environment.

How will the course be taught?
Learning methods include lectures, classroom based learning, research using the internet, group work, discussion and individual written work. Lessons are planned to take the learning needs of each individual into account. There is an on-line exam at the end of the course
How will I know how well I am doing?
You will work through assessments regularly so that you and your tutor can check your progress and go over any topics you are finding difficult. There will be practice exams before you sit the formal examination itself.
We can arrange Additional Learning Support to meet any individual needs you may have, and, if appropriate, make special arrangements for the exam. We will discuss this with you at interview.
Are there any additional costs?
There are very few additional course costs for learners beyond the fee. You will need basic stationery, and a good USB stick and a good calculator are useful. We have an excellent library and good IT facilities at college.
What course can I do next?
You can progress to the Level 2 AAT Diploma once you have completed Level 1. AAT is a suite of qualifications that can lead you to degree level or beyond.
