Course Description

This qualification encourages an understanding of the knowledge and the skills needed to care for young children. They cover children’s growth, learning and development. There are also units to help with self-development.

Who is the course suitable for?

Anyone who wants to develop parenting and life skills, including those with special educational needs or where English is an additionallanguage.

Course content

This qualification is designed to stimulate interest and encourage the learners’ understanding of the skills and knowledge needed to care for a child. The units cover both personal development and the development and growth of babies and young children.

They also explore: • The value of a healthy lifestyle and diet • Communication and learning • Aspects of play • The importance of building children’s confidence.

Additionally the range of units allows the learner to achieve above and below the level of the qualifications increasing their suitability for a variety of learners. Although they do not qualify learners to work with children they do support them in preparing for the “next steps” either in training or moving towards the world of work.

Development of Maths and English

Students who have not yet achieved at least a C grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements.

At Central Bedfordshire College Students who have a D in GCSE Maths and English will be required to retake these GCSE subjects in order to obtain at least a C grade at GCSE level, otherwise Functional Skills will be undertaken.

Employability Skills Development

Your study programme includes 1 hour per week of employability skills development which includes Careers Education, support and guidance on progression opportunities.

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced Child Care professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level. Lectures, discussions, independent research and practical tasks.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.

What course can I do next?

Further progression opportunities will depend on the learner’s abilities, but could include a broad range of destinations as outlined in Foundation Learning including: • GCSEs • Level 2 units and qualifications • Supported employment • Independent living

Course Fees

If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that you’re in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit – this course may be free!
