Course Description

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. Learners could also progress on to the CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Early Years Education and Care.

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task set by CACHE.

Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.

Who is the course suitable for?

This qualification is suitable for a range of learners from the age of 16 onwards who have little or no experience in childcare.

Course content

Theme 1 – Introducing the Role of the Early Years Practitioner Theme 2 – Legislation, Framework and Professional Practice Theme 3 – Play, Development and Learning for School Theme 4 – Professional Development

Development of Maths and English

Students who have not yet achieved at least a C grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements.

At Central Bedfordshire College Students who have a D in GCSE Maths and English will be required to retake these GCSE subjects in order to obtain at least a C grade at GCSE level.

Employability Skills Development

Your study programme includes 1 hour per week of employability skills development which includes Careers Education, support and guidance on progression opportunities.

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced Child Care professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level.

Lectures, discussions, independent research and practical tasks.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.

What course can I do next?

This qualification allows progression into the CACHE Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to childcare. Job roles include nursery assistant, class room assistant, nanny, pre-school assistant.

Course Fees

If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that you’re in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit – this course may be free!
