Course Description

You will develop your understanding and practical experience of specific engineering technologies. The course provides lots of hands on experience using the engineering equipment working to very high standards.

Who is the course suitable for?

Construction skills qualifications are suitable for individuals of any age wanting an introduction to the construction industry, or for learners interested in learning more about construction jobs like plumbing, painting and decorating, carpentry and plastering. You don't need any experience - you just need to be serious about having a go and seeing if construction is the right career for you.

Course content

This course prepares you with skills and knowledge in a variety of topics that will prepare you for the next level of education or a job in the Engineering Sector. You will need to be prepared to attend college 3 days per week and attend work experience.

Examples of units you will study are:

  1. Carpentry
  2. Brickwork
  3. Plumbing
  4. Electrical

You will also have the opportunity to upgrade Maths and English GCSE subjects. All students will be able to improve their Maths and English skills.

Development of Maths and English

Students who have not yet achieved at least a C grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements.

At Central Bedfordshire College Students who have a D in GCSE Maths and English will be required to retake these GCSE subjects in order to obtain at least a C grade at GCSE level.

Students who have achieved GCSE A – C Grade in English and Maths will be expected to develop their skills further completing a applied English and/or Maths project.

Employability Skills Development

Your study programme includes 1 hour per week of employability skills development which includes Careers Education, support and guidance on progression opportunities.

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level.

Lectures, discussions, independent research, online exams and practical tasks in a vocational setting.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.
