Course Description

This course will give you the opportunity to develop a range of skills in basic carpentry, electrical installation and plumbing, supporting progression on to further study in one of the specific disciplines at level 1 or 2.

Who is the course suitable for?

This course is for those learners with a keen interest in construction and aim to work in the construction industry. It will prepare you for further education in a specific discipline at level 1 or 2 in Site Carpentry, Plumbing or Electrical Installation. We have high professional standards and expectations of our learners and expect excellent attendance, punctuality and the wearing of PPE.

Course content

This course prepares you with skills and knowledge in a variety of topics such as Health & Safety, basic skills in the 3 disciplines. There are online exams and ongoing practical assessments. You will also be required to complete PPD, English and Maths alongside your Basic Construction course.

Development of Maths and English

Students who have not yet achieved at least a C / 4 grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements. These lessons are a mandatory element to your Study Programme if you are 19 or under at the 1st September 2019.

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level. Lessons can consist of lectures, discussions, independent research, online tests and individual and group practical tasks.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their learners on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost your course book (£25), PPE and of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. Trips and visits that may be arranged as well as your own portable memory device, pens and paper.

Where will I attend?

Your course will be taught at the Kingsland Campus in Houghton Regis but may be required to travel to our main campus in Kingsway, Dunstable for exams and other lessons.
