This quali?cation covers understanding the principles and practices of assessment, assessing occupational competence in the work environment and assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding

Who is the course suitable for?

This quali?cation is intended for those who assess in the work environment and in other training environments such as workshops or classrooms.

Course content

This quali?cation covers understanding the principles and practices of assessment, assessing occupational competence in the work environment and assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding. They are for staff who undertake or wish to undertake assessment of skills and knowledge and include a unit that covers all the essential knowledge and understanding assessors need. They are linked to National Occupational Standards (NOS) for: • Learning and development and have one or more units in common • Enabling credits and learning to be transferred from one • Qualification to the other providing direct progression routes.

Development of Maths and English

This will be embedded throughout your course. It does of course link directly to the students that you will be supporting.

Employability Skills Development

Again this is embedded throughout your programme.

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced Child Care professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level. Lectures, discussions, independent research and practical tasks.

You must provide evidence to show you can assess using all of the methods listed in the unit. As a minimum, there must be performance evidence for the following assessment methods (simulations are not allowed): • observation of performance in the work environment • examining products of work • questioning the learner

Other forms of evidence will be acceptable for the remaining assessment methods: • discussing with the learner • use of others (witness testimony) • looking at learner statements • recognising prior learning

They must also carry out at least two assessments of two learners’ occupational competence - four assessments in total. Holistic assessment is encouraged and one piece of evidence may be used to meet the requirements of more than one learning outcome or assessment criterion. The qualification will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria of the units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.

If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that you’re in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit- this course may be free!
