The VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering (QCF) is a technical level qualification that provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to work as an employed and/or self-employed barber able to work on hair combining a variety of different technical skills. This qualification is ideal for those who hold a hairdressing or barbering qualification and work in a commercial barbershop/salon
Who is the course suitable for?
If you have completed level 2 in barbering and have a job in a salon but are keen to progress to the advanced level of barbering then this is the right course for you.
This course prepares you with skills and knowledge in a variety of topics that will prepare you for the next level of education or a job a salon. You will need to be prepared to attend college 3 days per week and attend work experience in an external environment. You will also be required to attend college for some Saturdays.
Development of Maths and English
Students who have not yet achieved at least a C grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements.
At Central Bedfordshire College Students who have a D in GCSE Maths and English will be required to retake these GCSE subjects in order to obtain at least a C grade at GCSE level.
Employability Skills Development
Employability skills are embedded into your lessons through working in a realistic working environment.
How will the course be taught?
You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced hairdressing professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level.
Lectures, discussions, independent research, practical assessments, assignments and exams.
How will I know how well I am doing?
Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.
Are there any additional costs?
Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.
You are required to wear a uniform and it is useful to have your own equipment for practice at home.
What course can I do next?
You can progress onto Higher Education courses applying to study further into fields such as:
- Level 4 in Salon management
- VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Hair Colour Correction
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Barber (SRB) with The Hairdressing Council.

How do I join the course?
Fill in an application form and you will be invited for a presentation and interview with one of the tutors.
If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that youre in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit- this course may be free!
