The Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist. This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior beauty therapist.
Who is the course suitable for?
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, and will develop the knowledge and skills to prepare learners for employment as a junior beauty therapist. Learners will have their beauty therapy skills assessed in a real working environment.
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a beauty therapist including: facial skincare, enhancement of eyebrows and eyelashes, waxing services, manicure, pedicure, effectiveness at work, health and safety and promoting additional products and services to clients.
Learners will further develop their understanding and skills base by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: ear piercing, make-up services, spa operations, threading, skin camouflage, salon reception duties - the full list of optional units is presented in the learner Record of Assessment book (RoA) (specification). This qualification's structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a junior beauty therapist.
Your study programme will be made up of the Beauty course, English, Maths, Tutorials and Work Experience.
The beauty programme consists of 8 Mandatory units:
- Provide facial skin care treatment
- Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes
- Carry out waxing services
- Provide manicure services
- Provide pedicure services
- Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
- Promote additional services or products to customers
- Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
and 2 optional units
Development of Maths and English
Students who have not yet achieved at least a C grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements.
At Central Bedfordshire College Students who have a D in GCSE Maths and English will be required to retake these GCSE subjects in order to obtain at least a C grade at GCSE level.
Employability Skills Development
All students will be required to attend work experience in an external environment once a week and attend SOME Saturday sessions in college for work based learning sessions
How will the course be taught?
You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced Beauty Therapy professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress through on-going assessment in practical skills and theory tests as well as study programmes and work experience.
How will I know how well I am doing?
Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations. Your work will be tracked using ProMonitor which you will also be able to monitor.
Are there any additional costs?
Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement.
You will need to purchase the course tunic and we strongly recommend that you purchase the Level 2 beauty kit, you will only become proficient through practice and this will enable you to practice at home. We may also request contributions to trips and outings such as Professional Beauty 2015 at London Excel.

Fill in an application form and you will be invited for a presentation and interview with one of the tutors.
If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that youre in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit- this course may be free!
