Course Description

The NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills is an ideal qualification for those seeking to enhance their functional role through the use of counselling skills. This qualification can be used as a progression route towards a range of qualifications, eg counselling, advice and guidance, or workplace mentoring.

This qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor.

The qualification could contribute towards aspects of the NHS knowledge and skills framework in relation to the following dimensions:

core 1: communication core 2: personal and people development core 6: equality and diversity HWB7: interventions and treatments

This quali?cation is intended as a useful progression route for those interested in furthering their study or widening their work role. The qualification does not qualify learners to practice as a counsellor.

Course content

This qualification aims to provide learners with more in-depth knowledge of the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work and the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to: • develop counselling skills • understand the different approaches involved in the use of counselling skills • appreciate the importance of self-development

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced Counselling professional who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level. Lectures, discussions, independent research and practical tasks.

You must provide evidence to show you can assess using all of the methods listed in the unit. As a minimum, there must be performance evidence for the following assessment methods (simulations are not allowed): • observation of performance in the work environment • examining products of work • questioning the learner

Other forms of evidence will be acceptable for the remaining assessment methods: • discussing with the learner • use of others (witness testimony) • looking at learner statements • recognising prior learning

They must also carry out at least two assessments of two learners’ occupational competence - four assessments in total. Holistic assessment is encouraged and one piece of evidence may be used to meet the requirements of more than one learning outcome or assessment criterion. The qualification will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria of the units must be achieved in order to obtain a pass.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.

If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that you’re in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit- this course may be free!
