This course is suitable for learners who are looking to either start, or continue studying, an English Functional Skills qualification at entry level, level 1, or level 2. We will ask you to complete an online skills assessment as part of the application process to help us understand and improve your current skills.
This course is offered on the following days and times: Tuesday evenings from 6pm 9pm Wednesday mornings from 11am 2pm Wednesday evenings from 6pm - 9pm Saturday mornings from 9.30am - 12.30pm
Courses commence in September and April.
WHO IS THE COURSE SUITABLE FOR?
This course is for those who wish to improve or develop their existing English reading and writing skills, and gain qualifications nationally recognised by employers and training providers. These skills will help you to build your knowledge and understanding of English, and will also enable you to improve essential key skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the English language.
THREE KEY SKILL AREAS ARE TARGETED BY FUNCTIONAL SKILLS ENGLISH
1) SPEAKING, LISTENING AND COMMUNICATION 2) READING 3) WRITING
These three key skill areas progressively develop in complexity and sophistication as you progress through the three Levels. Clear learning aims and objectives within the teaching and learning programme help you to understand and achieve your individual learning and development goals.
Development of Maths and English
EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Good English communication skills and numeracy competence are recognised by employers as fundamental to employment and career progression. Functional Skills English and Functional Skills Maths are designed to enhance your employability by improving your essential skill base. Our courses will help you to recognise and develop these skills
HOW WILL THE COURSE BE TAUGHT?
The course is classroom based and taught over 14-15 academic weeks. Our teaching sessions are three hours long and our teaching model focuses on three stages. These key strategic stages are Skills Development Skills Practice Exam Practice, and all of them are applied to the Learning Core Content. You will also have access to the College Virtual learning Environment (VLE) where additional resources are provided to enable you to practice skills learned in the classroom.
HOW WILL I KNOW HOW WELL I AM DOING?
Monitored individual assessments and feedback on your progression is continuous throughout the course. As the course progresses, past papers and practice examination sessions help you to develop exam techniques.

There are no other additional costs to the course.

Success in Functional Skills English enables learners to progress to GCSEs.

HOW DO I JOIN THE COURSE?
There are 3 levels in Functional Skills English taught at Central Bedfordshire College: Entry Level 3 This is the third and final stage of the Entry Levels. Level 1 This is the first of the Intermediate Levels Level 2 This is the second and final stage of the Intermediate Levels
Levels are not pre-designated without a previous qualification achievement. Ongoing individual assessment throughout the course ensures learners are entered for the appropriate exam level for their current demonstrable skills levels.
