You will need a good standard of English (Level 2 or equivalent) and IT in order to complete a portfolio of work. You will need to be proficient in the subject you intend to teach in order to use the qualification.
The Award in Education and Training is an initial qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience and will support you to develop the skills and confidence you need to teach and train in the post-compulsory sector.
Who is the course suitable for?
The course is suitable for people who would like to teach or train in the post-compulsory sector (e.g. further education, adult education, higher education, workplace training).
The course covers some of the principles and theories of teaching and learning, inclusive practice, roles and responsibilities of teachers and trainers and gives a practical introduction to lesson planning, developing resources and materials, curriculum development and assessment. You will have plenty of opportunity to discuss your work with others on the course and opportunity to try out new ideas in micro-teaching sessions.
Development of Maths and English
You will develop the study skills you need to complete the portfolio of evidence, including English and Mathematics, and will discuss how English and Maths skills can be developed in your own students.
Employability Skills Development
We will support your professional development throughout the course, discussing the range of jobs available linking them to your skills and experience.
How will the course be taught?
Courses begin in October and February. The course is taught Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning across 16 3-hour sessions. There will be taught sessions, group working and research and workshops. Micro-teach sessions will give you the chance to practise your skills.
How will I know how well I am doing?
You will be assessed throughout the course, with no final examination. You will present a portfolio of assignments covering the topics of the course, including feedback and reflection on a micro-teaching session to your colleagues on the course. The tutor will help you to monitor your progress and set targets for improvement throughout the course.
Are there any additional costs?
There are few additional course costs for learners beyond the fee We have an excellent library and good IT facilities at college, so if you dont have access to the internet at home, you can complete your work in college or at the University.
What course can I do next?
After completing the course, you can teach or train with increased confidence. You may wish to take a Certificate in Education or Professional Graduate Certificate in Education.
