Course Description

These courses are validated and awarded by the University of Bedfordshire. The Award qualifies you to teach in post-compulsory education. The course is designed to enable you to develop your skills, confidence and theoretical knowledge in education and training.

Who is the course suitable for?

The courses are suitable for teachers or intending teachers in post-compulsory education.

Course content

The course is based in reflective learning with skills-based, practical teaching. You will learn how to organise and plan your teaching and learning sessions and use different assessment methods; how to plan and develop inclusive learning and promote equality in your lessons and understand how to use a range of classroom management skills. You will examine teaching and learning theories and learning about the contexts in which teaching and training happen. You will consider curriculum design and will review, reflect on and develop your own professional practice.

Development of Maths and English

You will build on a range of study and vocational skills including English and Mathematics and ICT during the course.

Employability Skills Development

College and University staff will support your professional development throughout the course, discussing the range of jobs available in education settings and linking them to your skills and experience.

How will the course be taught?

The course is taught on Mondays (first year) and Fridays (second year.) There will be lectures, discussions, supported research, support group working and reflection. You will use the college’s virtual learning environment and the University of Bedfordshire’s, and will have access to all the facilities of both organisations.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Assessment is through a series of assignments and a portfolio which includes reflection on your practice. Your tutor will help you track your progress and support you in completing the programme of assessment successfully.

Are there any additional costs?

There are very few additional course costs for learners beyond the fee. You will need basic stationery, and a good USB stick and a scientific calculator are useful. We have an excellent library and good IT facilities at college, so if you don’t have access to the internet at home, you can complete your work in college or at the University.

What course can I do next?

Completion of these Awards will equip you to work in the post-compulsory sector. You can undertake a process of Professional Formation after achieving the Award which will qualify you to teach in schools as well.
