Course Description

The suite of ITQ qualifications allow individuals to acquire IT skills that will help them work effectively and productively in their employment. There is a wide choice of units to choose from, including office-based applications, IT security, and IT maintenance. In addition, there are multimedia-based applications, including video software and audio software, which also complement the ITQ suite.

Who is the course suitable for?

If exams are not your preferred method of study and you want to keep your options open to either work or progress to higher education then one of these options may be right for you.

This course is suitable for academically capable learners and should not be viewed as an easier alternative because you are going to be trained by experienced professionals who have knowledge in the fields you may be interested in. We have high professional standards and expectations of our learners.

Course content

This course prepares you with skills and knowledge in a variety of topics that will prepare you for the next level of education or a job in the IT Sector. You will need to be prepared to attend college 3 days per week and attend work experience.

Examples of units you will study are:

  1. Improving Productivity Using IT
  2. IT User Fundamentals
  3. Set Up an IT System
  4. Optimise IT System Performance
  5. Using the Internet
  6. Spreadsheet Software
  7. Website Software
  8. Word Processing Software

You will have the opportunity to upgrade Maths and English GCSE subjects.

Development of Maths and English

Students who have not yet achieved at least a C grade in English and Maths will have to continue taking these subjects up to the age of 18, as per government requirements.

At Central Bedfordshire College Students who have a D in GCSE Maths and English will be required to retake these GCSE subjects in order to obtain at least a C grade at GCSE level.

Students who have achieved GCSE A – C Grade in English and Maths will be expected to develop their skills further completing an applied English and/or Maths project.

Employability Skills Development

Your study programme includes 1 hour per week of employability skills development which includes Careers Education, support and guidance on progression opportunities.

How will the course be taught?

You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced professionals who will use a wide variety of teaching methods to help you to learn and progress to the next level.

Lectures, discussions, independent research and practical tasks.

How will I know how well I am doing?

Every student has a personal tutor who will meet with their tutees on a regular basis to ensure they are making good progress. Tutors make sure that you receive regular feedback, manage your workload and meet college expectations.

Are there any additional costs?

Coming to college is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to college and potentially to a local work placement. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase if you wish. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings.

What course can I do next?

You can progress onto:

  • iTQ Level 2 IT Users
  • Level 2 Diploma in ICT Systems Support
  • BTEC First Diploma in Information and Creative Technologies

Alternatively you could look for an Apprenticeship in related fields such as:

  • Business Administration
  • Website Developer
  • IT Support Technician

Fill in an application form and you will be invited for a presentation and interview with one of the tutors.

Course Fees

If you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you begin your course or if you are actively seeking employment and can provide evidence that you’re in receipt of a state benefit e.g. job seekers, housing benefit- this course may be free!
