Amazon in Dunstable teamed up with Central Bedfordshire College for a day of educational fun for local secondary school pupils.

Pupils from Vandyke Upper School enjoyed a day of activities at Camp Amazon in Dunstable, which included Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) based sessions with Central Bedfordshire College teachers, who visited the fulfilment centre to teach the pupils about a wide range of tech topics, including computer programming and educated them on further education in STEM subjects and the rewarding future career opportunities that STEM subjects offer.

During their visit, pupils also took a behind-the-scenes tour of the Amazon fulfilment centre, where they had their first introduction to Amazon’s Robotics technology. The robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed. They lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre. Find out more about Amazon Robotics here. The students watched the Amazon robots in action and learned about working with the technology when they met with local Amazon engineer, Ryan Salmon and Amazon apprentices who shared their experiences in a question and answer session.

Speaking on the activity, Sertac Yilmaz, General Manager at Amazon in Dunstable, said:

“We were thrilled to join forces with Sarah, Adam and Derek from Central Bedfordshire College to deliver an exciting day to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. Amazon is dedicated to bringing STEM innovation into the classroom, which is why we created Camp Amazon. It is a great opportunity to welcome young, bright minds to our facilities and teach them how we innovate for our customers.

“Camp Amazon was created so students can see the wide range of possibilities a future career in this field has to offer and what skill sets are needed for success in today’s digital world. We hope the students enjoyed the visit and that meeting with local experts has inspired them to pursue a fulfilling career in STEM.”

Jeff Bowes, STEM Co-ordinator at Vandyke Upper School, added:

“On behalf of the school and our students, I would like to say a huge thank you to Amazon and Central Bedfordshire College for a fantastic day of STEM education. Our students are grateful for the opportunity to learn and challenge themselves to apply their new knowledge to real-life scenarios. The students were also fascinated with the robotics and enjoyed hearing from Amazon’s apprentices about how they pursued their passion for technology and innovation.

“Amazon’s STEM activity is an excellent example of the business community helping our students to ensure they have every resource needed to succeed academically. I am sure our students will be talking about today’s activities for months to come.”

Vandyke Upper School participated in Camp Amazon as part of the company’s ‘Amazon in the Community’ programme, whereby the company supports communities in and around where it operates in the UK.
