Central Bedfordshire College is flying the flag nationally having reached the finals in the annual TES FE Awards 2018. The College’s Student Services team has been shortlisted for the Professional Services Team of The Year award, praised for demonstrating best practice in the sector.
Vice Principal Sarah Mortimer was delighted the team had been shortlisted, as they have transformed the landscape at the college, unifying the experience for students from all backgrounds and cultures, she said: “The team’s objective has been to deliver an environment where students feel safe, supported and empowered to achieve. I am hugely proud that against some very challenging circumstances, the team has delivered outstanding outcomes for students with a staggering 96% of students progressing to higher education, apprenticeships and employment and high grades placing the College in the top 12% in the country.”
The judges shortlisted Central Beds against a set of tough criteria for the collaborative approach that exists between Student Services, the curriculum and the Senior Management Team. The Student Services team has woven “a golden thread of support and connectivity” throughout the campus. The impact has changed the culture at the College, which Ofsted described as “harmonious” and where students feel comfortable, safe and supported to achieve. The College has also introduced an initiative, which was praised by Ofsted, which encourages philosophical debate among students around contentious issues which has contributed to a culture of respect, understanding and tolerance among students and staff.
Ms Mortimer continued: “The work of the Student Services team has been pivotal in supporting the quality improvements noted here at Central Beds. They have created a progressive, harmonious, environment which has essentially eliminated the achievement gap between different student groups and we have more students than ever succeeding at higher levels.”
The judges were also impressed with the College’s safeguarding and security arrangements, exemplary careers advice and guidance and the open relationship they promote with students.
The TES FE Awards ceremony will take place on the evening of Friday 23 February 2018 at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, London.
