Results of Area Based Review

As the premier technical and vocational college in the area, Central Bedfordshire College remains focused on and committed to delivering its key priorities:

  • Continue delivering excellence in teaching, learning and assessment in meeting the needs of business and learners across the whole area of Luton and South Central Bedfordshire
  • Setting up an Institute of Technology (IoT) focused on higher technologies to meet current and future needs appropriately located to maximise impact

Following the conclusion of the Government-led Area Based Review, the Corporations of Central Bedfordshire College and Barnfield College have agreed to jointly commission a feasibility study to explore the development of a single, forward-looking organisation through merger. The study will commence immediately and will report at the end of July 2017. The Corporations have agreed that the newly merged Institution would commence on 1 September 2018 (unless both parties agree to an alternative date).

The new college will have the potential to better meet the current demand for skills and the new opportunities presented by the region’s ambitious plans for growth and innovation.

Principal of Central Bedfordshire College Mr Ali Hadawi CBE said: “We are entering the next phase of discussions regarding a potential merger between Central Bedfordshire College and Barnfield College. With our strong focus on employer engagement and recognised high standards of teaching and learning the merger presents opportunity to provide even greater investment in education and training for the communities and employers in the region.”

Statement from Professor James Crabbe:

“As Chair of Governors of the top Ofsted rated FE College in Luton and South Bedfordshire, I am delighted that we have the potential to take forward our exciting vision for learners in the area. This could at last reduce skills gaps and skills shortages in this vital regeneration area for the country. We are working closely with our partner FE College, Barnfield College, on developing a scoping exercise to really detail the possibilities and potential for merger. It is a very exciting time for staff, students, businesses and local authorities alike.”
