A NEW COLLEGE FOR A NEW ERA! The Official Central Bedfordshire College Launch Event 14 January 2010
To celebrate the rebrand to Central Bedfordshire College we held a special launch event on Thursday 14th January involving students, staff and members of the local community.
Events on the day were split into two parts with students enjoying celebrations in the hall hosted by Heart Radio’s Babs and Adam who really got everyone in the party mood. The headline act Exit Avenue, who appeared at Download 2009 and have been played on Radio One and Kerrang, kept the celebrations going with their own brand of energetic pop, rock, dance and R&B combinations. Two student bands, Inacore and Debasser also had the chance to get on stage and warm up for Exit Avenue.
VIP Guests including the Mayors of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, representatives from the University of Bedfordshire, local schools and the media were invited to attend the Principals Reception in the College Bistro, catered for by Hospitality & Catering students and hosted by Cabin Crew students. The Principal, Chris Vesey, cut a special Central Bedfordshire College Cake made by Sugarcraft tutor, Denise Connor, to commemorate the event.
Students were heavily involved in the whole launch event and many were key to its success. Media students in particular played an important part, being responsible for setting up, sound engineering for the bands, filming and photographing the whole event. Without them and tutors, Brendan, Jonathan and Luke, the event would not have been possible.
Students and staff from the Health & Social Care Department were fantastic in collecting money throughout the day in aid of Keech Hospice Care and the Pathways department made Central Beds branded cupcakes and flower arrangements.
The full programme of events at all three campuses is listed below.

American University Soccer Programmes recognise the talent at Central Beds College
Central Bedfordshire College are proud to announce an exciting development with two very exciting links with two American Universities, Tiffin University in Ohio and Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina.
The links will provide Central Bedfordshire College Students a fantastic opportunity to study, train and live in the United States.
Belmont Abbey’s Assistant Soccer Coach, Stuart Gore, visited Central Beds College whilst he was in the UK recruiting in the American off season. Stuart had been reading up on the college’s recent success in all three of their leagues and how the College is currently at the top and phoned ahead to see if he could come and watch the students play and train.
Stuart was that impressed with the talent that the college had to offer he immediately got in touch with his Manger and the link was set up, he also called the head coach Tiffin University, Ohio, and recommended to them that they also could benefit from a link to Central Bedfordshire College and that link has also been established.
Partnership
This partnership between the two universities will allow the Central Bedfordshire College students who meet the strict criteria to study their chosen degree to benefit from a fantastic experience living and studying in the United States. It will also allow them the opportunity to achieve their degree and graduate debt free.
Scholarships
Scholarships are only offered to students of the highest calibre both academically through their sporting excellence, in this case football. The students will receive an academic scholarship and a sporting scholarship which will pay for the majority of their tuition fees. Both of the schools fee are around $20,000 a year and our lucky students will only have to pay approximately $4000 depending on their grades and their footballing ability. On completion of their degree in the states the students will be debt free and be ready to start their careers.
Two students have already been offered scholarships and there is plenty of interest for next year.
Recruitment
Central Beds players will be recommended to the universities by Colin Sharpe the Football Development manager at the college on an annual basis. Stuart and the other American coaches will come over to the college in the off season to take a look at the players for themselves and check their academic grades with the college before the players are 100% selected and offered places. The college will also be invited over to the states to participate in tournaments against other colleges in Ohio and North Carolina.
Future
Overall these links with Belmont Abbey College and Tiffin University will allow Central Bedfordshire College a unique opportunity to send its most talented students to gain an American soccer scholarship in the states. Also this link will also attract more local players to the programme as Central Beds are the only college in the county that can offer such an excellent opportunity.
Central Beds Record Breakers
In an exciting game against Oxford City, Central Beds came out top with a final score of 16-1 in their favour. It is not only an impressive score but also a College record and better still, a league record. This is another great accolade for Central Bedfordshire College with their strong Football Development Programme.
Bottom of the league Oxford City lay in wait for Central Beds and after a very close 4-3 game at home, Oxford were probably hoping for an upset against the top of the league on their home ground.
After such a disappointing result and performance from Central Beds last time these two sides met in the league, the team were told that another performance like that would not be acceptable. Even though Beds won the game and had four players missing on England trials.
Central Beds started the game brightly and were playing some fantastic football and they deservedly took the lead through Jake Bewley. Bewley was on hand again minutes later to double the lead with a great long range effort.
All the signs where there that it was going to be a good day for Central Beds as Morgan scored twice followed by a goal poachers finish by Bryn Reynolds, moments before the half time whistle. It was 5-0 at the break, with oxford not managing one effort on target.
Central Beds were warned at half time not to be complacent in the second half as they knew that Oxford would be coming out with all guns blazing as they were now playing for pride!
The second half became the Ellingham and Murray show as they notched up a staggering 9 goals between them with Ellingham getting 5 and Murray 4, his was followed up by two more from Reynolds to complete his hat-trick.
Football Development Manager, Colin Sharpe, commented, “We dominated the game from start to finished and could have scored more if had not been for the Goalkeeper. We remained professional throughout and worked very hard as a team to insure that they didn’t get sight of our goal. However they did nick a last minute consolation goal which was a good sign as they never gave up despite the score, which is a credit to them”
Central Beds students win 10 places at AHT National Finals
Ten students studying Hairdressing and Theatrical Makeup at Central Bedfordshire College have been chosen to go to the finals of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) National UK Trainee Competition.
Fifteen teams from various colleges and learning providers took part in the South Regional Finals held at Bexley College on 8 February and the chosen finalists will be competing in the National finals at The Blackpool Winter Gardens Hair Festival on 22 March 2010. The high profile national competition, which takes place at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens venue every year, attracts more than 600 competitors and up to 6000 visitors.
Central Beds College was up against teams from Uxbridge, North West London and South Downs Colleges, all of whom regularly compete in the competition. Gary Lee, Head of Department at Central Beds, was very proud of his teams; “Last year was our first year and we had two students go through to the nationals, one with a first place. The target this year was five and the staff and students have surpassed themselves, delivering an outstanding ten places. I am delighted that Central Beds is on the national competition stage where it belongs!”.
In total, 38 students from Central Beds College competed in the event at Bexley and the finalists are very excited about the next stage at Blackpool. Curriculum Manger for Hairdressing, Lindsey White commented, “It was a very long day, but truly worth it, Look out Blackpool – here we come!!!”.
Central Beds Graduate wins Bronze for ‘Peperami’ Competition
Richard Zhuk, graduate from the BA Honours Graphic Design at Central Bedfordshire College, was recently awarded with a Bronze Award for his story board entry.
Whilst on a work placement with Grey, a Design Agency based in London, Richard came across the brief set by’ Idea Bounty’. Snack brand ‘Peperami’ were looking for a new print and TV ad that was an unapologetic, unexpected and incredibly memorable piece of communication.
The brief attracted over 2000 entries, and Richard’s story board concept was highly commended and awarded Bronze. “I didn’t win but I did get some kind of recognition, which is always great in the design world. Plus, the more brands for your portfolio the better!”
After studying for a National Diploma, Foundation Degree and a BA (Hons) Degree, Richard’s time at Central Bedfordshire College has proven to be invaluable, giving him the knowledge he needed to progress after graduation. Now working for leading advertising and communications agency in London, Publicis, he puts his success down to his determination, “The industry is a very competitive place but if you have the right attitude you will succeed.”

Central Beds Media Students organise local music for young fans!
Chrome Red Music is a local Promotions Company set up by fans! These guys love music and that’s why they want to put on shows. After attending so many local shows themselves the Chrome Red crew, consisting of James Hodge, aged 17, Martin Farrar, 18 – both Media students at Central Bedfordshire College, along with Mark Pilborough-Skinner, 17 and Lewis Denison, 17, both from Manshead Upper School, decided they wanted a piece of the action!
Chrome Red Music aims to bring the bands and acts that young fans want to see in their local area. These kids know their favourites and their nights promise to deliver the “in thing” along with the “next big thing” in a way that will keep you coming back!
Chrome Red Music gigs will be aimed at a younger audience, allowing them to captivate on the feeling that they themselves had, that there is not enough for young people to do locally. Coming from local schools and Central Bedfordshire College, they not only have direct access to the fans, but they can also relate to them and an added bonus is the support they have, particularly from the Media Department at the college.
The group also have their own photographer who will be capturing the events in the form of Tom Parks, 16, who is also a Media student from Central Beds. His photo, attached, shows the Chrome Red Crew.
