Animal care training is an obvious choice for those that have a passion for animal welfare. Whether you’ve dreamt of working with animals from a young age, or have decided later in life – perhaps following a career in a completely different field – that this is what you really want to do, our animal care courses will give you the underlying knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the animal care sector.

Course Overview

This course focuses on animal management, science and covers a more in-depth knowledge of animal breeding, genetics, biology and behaviour. You will develop practical laboratory skills throughout the programme and gain an education in ethics, welfare and animal nutrition. You will learn through a variety of different methods including practical work during your course to develop your skills. You will be required to complete 100 hours of work experience throughout your course.

Your areas of study will include: • Animal breeding and genetics • Welfare and ethics • Practical animal husbandry • Animal biology, health and disease • Animal behaviour • Animal metabolism and nutrition

You will undertake a weekly experience day at a local animal attraction for hands-on learning and teaching from field professionals, in addition to this you will attend the main college site in Dunstable for 3 days per week to ensure you develop sound theoretical knowledge and undertake work in the biology lab.

Your assessments throughout this course will keep you on track to achieve; these could include observations in your work placement, assignment tasks and a portfolio of evidence to support your learning.

Your Tutor will be on hand to support you throughout your course to develop your skills, prepare you for your next steps and help you to achieve your goals.

Upon completing your course, you have a great range of options available to help you continue your adventure. • You may choose to continue your studies into Higher Education and progress onto a University Degree. We do recommend a few good resources that you can choose to purchase which we discuss at interview. We may request contributions are made to trips and outings. You will need a pair of overalls and steel-capped wellington boots to complete your practical work for this course.
