In recognition of the diverse range of language needs in the Central Bedfordshire Area, Central Beds College now offers three English Language for the Workplace development courses. These courses are tailored for second-language learner and incorporate elements from second-language teaching and Functional Skills for the workplace. The courses are intensive, ten-week programmes and are designed to help learners progress their English to proficiency levels demanded by Employers and Higher Education criteria. The courses run on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-9pm at the Main Campus in Dunstable. We also offer the Beginners Programme at the Dallow Road Community Centre on Monday and Tuesday mornings, and the Intermediate Programme on Friday mornings. Initial Courses run October to January and February to May. In 2020/2021 we hope to offer the courses from September to December, January to March, and April to June
Our intermediate course is designed for learners who have a good range of vocabulary, familiarity with writing and reading, and who are reasonably comfortable speaking English, but who would also like to develop all of these skills to a higher level. Focus will be on vocabulary development, complex sentence building, punctuation, contemporary text analysis, language and text features, types of texts, writing for different purposes, and developing argument and persuasive techniques in English. Students will be encouraged to debate and hone persuasive techniques.
