Around 450 million people currently suffer from mental health problems, with recent reports suggesting that over 12 million working days were lost due to work-related stress, depression or anxiety in just one year. It’s important that employers are transparent and open about mental health issues, and this qualification builds an understanding of mental health problems and the support available to colleagues. Increasing the understanding of mental health of staff at all levels builds a culture of care and support.

Course Overview

The purpose of this qualification is to give learners the skills to support colleagues with mental health problems. These skills will be gained by increasing the learner’s knowledge and understanding of mental health conditions and the principles of mental health first aid and how this can be implemented in the workplace. This qualification is suitable for learners who wish to raise awareness of mental health, creating a culture of care and the promotion of positive mental health. This qualification gives learners the opportunity to understand mental health, its associated care and how this can be applied to learners or colleagues in the workplace. To be awarded this qualification, learners are required to successfully complete 3 mandatory units. What options are there after completing this course?

Upon completing your course, you have a great range of options available to help you continue your adventure. This qualification can support progression to employment and further education within employment for the following job roles and workers:

• Level 2 and 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England • Level 2 and 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care • Level 2 Award in Awareness of Dementia • Level 2 and 3 Certificate for Working in the Health Sector • Level 3 Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care • Level 3 Certificate in Stroke Care Management • Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in Health & Social Care.

Workers within a wide range of public service roles will interact with those with mental health issues and support needs in their day-to-day work across a number of sectors. This qualification may be useful to learners studying qualifications in the following sector(s)/area(s): • customer service • housing • voluntary sector • sport and recreation • hospitality • travel and tourism.

Additional information

The course is designed to be completed in 12 weeks, approximatley 4 hours per week will be required to complete all units. If you can commit to more, the qualification can be completed more quickly. If you're 19+ and have lived in the EU for the past 3 years, your course/s will be free - you just need to complete it/them within 12 weeks or pay a £100 fee if you don’t. The funding for this course comes from the Education and Skills Funding Agency. We can claim this on your behalf if you live in England, except for those living in Greater London or any of the other devolved authorities (Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, West of England, West Midlands, the Tees Valley and Cambridge & Peterborough), in which case you should find a College nearer to home to provide your course.
