At Central Beds College, our courses will help you develop the essential English and Maths skills to gain the confidence you need for everyday life, and to further your education and career prospects.
We offer a range of courses from beginner levels all the way up to GCSE programmes.
It is never too late to take these qualifications, which can open doors to a whole range of education and career opportunities.
Applying to study
When you apply for a course, you will be invited in to attend an interview and complete an assessment. This allows us to place you in an appropriate level for your Maths and/or English skill.

The free courses we offer for adults include the following:
Functional Skills English courses develop, practise and increase your everyday understanding and use of the English language and to build on all three key skills of speaking, reading, and writing.
Your next step is Functional Skill English Level 1.
At Level 1, your spoken language will become more fluent, your reading and writing skills will be sufficient for a working environment where good written communication with others is required.
Many employers, colleges and universities request this Level 2 qualification as necessary before considering applications for jobs or courses of study that lead to recognised vocational qualifications. This programme runs for a full academic year (September – June) and is the most recognised and sought-after qualification in English in the UK today. You will improve your literary, organisation, and analytical skills in the English language.
Functional Skills Maths courses develop, practise and increase your everyday key skills so you have a solid foundation in the key arithmetic elements of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
At Level 1, with the key elements of arithmetic in place, you will develop your maths skills further, with more complex mathematical problems, and learn to apply your maths skills to solving problems in familiar employment situations.
Many employers, colleges and universities request this Level 2 qualification as necessary before considering applications for jobs or courses of study that lead to recognised vocational qualifications. This programme runs for a full academic year (September – June) and is the most recognised and sought-after qualification in Maths in the UK today. The GCSE Programme looks to improve learners’ numeracy, analytical and problem-solving skills.
