Is this course right for me?
This course is a great option if you are looking to develop your maths skills and gain a Functional Skills qualification at entry level, level 1, or level 2.
This course is for those who wish to improve or develop their existing maths skills, and gain qualifications nationally recognised by employers and training providers. These skills will help you to build your knowledge and understanding of English, and will also enable you to improve essential key skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening in the English language.
We will ask you to complete an online skills assessment as part of the application process to help us understand and improve your current skills, this will also ensure you are placed on the course level that suits you.
Your areas of study will include:
Understanding and using positive and negative numbers of any size in practical contexts
Calculations with numbers of any size in practical contexts, to a given number of decimal places
Using ratio and proportion, including problems involving scale
Using equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages
Using simple formulae and equations involving one or two operations
Recognising and using 2-D representations of 3-D objects
Finding the area, perimeter and volume of common shapes
Using, converting and calculating using metric and, where appropriate, imperial measures
Using and interpreting statistical measures, tables and diagrams
Using statistical methods to investigate situations
Using probability to assess the likelihood of an outcome.
These key skill areas progressively develop in complexity and sophistication as you progress through the three Levels. Clear learning aims and objectives within the course help you to understand and achieve your individual learning and development goals.
This course is offered on a Tuesday evening between 6pm and 9pm, or a Saturday between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Courses commence in September and April.
Your assessments throughout this course will keep you on track to achieve; you will be assessed through verbal, and course work based assessments that are on-going throughout the course on the topic being studied at that time. There are also practice examinations throughout the course to you help develop exam techniques. Your Tutor will be on hand to support you throughout your course to develop your skills, prepare you for your next steps and help you to achieve your goals.
