Course Overview
This course is for those who wish to improve or develop their existing English reading and writing skills, and gain qualifications nationally recognised by employers and training providers.
This GCSE syllabus combines English Language with elements of English Literature, including explicit and implicit meanings; analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions; articulate experience; sequence facts, ideas and opinions; use a range of appropriate vocabulary and make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar. You will also learn how to understand and produce non-fiction and fictional texts.
We will ask you to complete an online skills assessment as part of the application process to help us understand and improve your current skills, this will also ensure you are placed on the course level that suits you.
Your areas of study will include: Identifying and interpreting themes, ideas and information in a range of literature. Understanding how writers compose text in different ways for different purposes and comparing and evaluating the usefulness, relevance and presentation of the text. Writing skills Evaluating a writers choice of vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features. Analysing and evaluating how the form and structure of writing contributes to the effectiveness and impact of a text. Producing clear and coherent text effectively for different purposes and audiences which describes, narrates, explains, and instructs. Using language imaginatively and creatively in different forms to select, organising and emphasising facts, ideas and key points; using language devices.

This course is offered on either a Tuesday afternoon between 2pm and 5pm, or on a Tuesday evening between 6 and 9pm.
Your assessments throughout this course will keep you on track to achieve; monitored individual assessments and feedback on your progression continues throughout your course. As the course progresses, past papers and practice examination sessions help you to develop exam techniques. Your Tutor will be on hand to support you throughout your course to develop your skills, prepare you for your next steps and help you to achieve your goals.

Additional information
Coming to College is a full time commitment and you will need to ensure that you have factored in the cost of travelling to College. There are no additional kit requirements for this course our dedicated Learning Resource Centre can provide you with access to a wide range of resources to assist in your studies. The course is classroom based over 30 academic weeks. You will also have access to the College Virtual learning Environment (VLE) which will give you access to additional resources to practice the skills you learn in the classroom.
