Will the course give me what I want?
This course is a great starting point for those aiming to be employed within the public services. The course is an ideal platform for anybody considering careers in the police, fire service, prison service, army, Royal Navy or the Royal Air Force. Furthermore, completion of this course will leave you in a good position to carry on your study at university if you so choose. We run this course at 2 different sizes, both at Level 3. The reason for this is to allow for a joint focus between Public Services and a maths or English qualification for those that have not achieved one prior to starting. We can explain this in more detail at the enrolment events, or at interviews and open days. We have a history of good grades on the Level 3 course and encourage students to push themselves to aim for Distinctions and to progress on to higher qualifications.
Your areas of study will include: Preparing for a career in a chosen uniformed service Develop aspects of physical fitness Develop leadership skills Crime Scene Investigation Map reading and navigation Emergency planning and response Understand the impacts of war and conflict Volunteering Along with the practical work, and to help you complete your units, you will experience sessions planned and delivered by the uniformed services. This includes Bedfordshire Police, Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery and more.
How will I learn?
You will be able to learn in a fun and interactive environment with a tutor that is experienced in teaching a range of public services courses. You will learn through a variety of different methods including practicals, interactive sessions, videos, presentations, lectures, group work and self evaluations.
How will I be assessed?
You will study a wide range of units from understanding the impact of war and crime scene investigations to developing aspects of physical fitness and developing leadership skills. The work you complete will be assessed via a mix of written assignments, presentations and practical work.
Equipment and other costs
We do ask that any student wishing to partake in trips and visits purchases the public services kit, which consists of a hoodie and polo shirt. There are other optional items available too.
What additional work outside of college will I need to do?
You will be expected to complete assignments at home and submit them by a deadline.
Do I need to find a work placement? Do I need a DBS?
Yes, there is one work placement unit, you will be given help to find a placement. You will need to complete a DBS before starting your placement.
